Allow left hand drive vehicles on Island

From "Red Tape Reduction Consultation"

Go to the project

Bermuda is a relatively small country with a small population, we are limiting ourselves by exclusively allowing right hand drive cars.

The right hand drive car market represents less than 25% of the world's total vehicle supply. These vehicles are also more complicated and more costly to maintain as we have to buy parts from far abroad in countries like india.

At the least Bermuda should be allowed to import left hand drive cars and freely drive left hand cars on the left hand side of the road. At the utmost extremity I think that Bermuda should turn into a left hand drive country and also allow right hand drive vehicles to continue until the attrition off the road. This is not a new concept, Sweden converted from right hand drive to Left hand drive many years ago and this is a doable thing.

There was an internal discussion document in W&E in the early 90s suggesting that Bermuda switch to driving on the right in order to save money on vehicle imports. It made perfect sense but the time to implement it would have been in 1950, before widespread cars. Fun fact: Newfoundland switched from left to right on January 1st 1949 after they voted to join Canada instead of remaining a separate UK colony.

Can't drive right hand cars properly so what makes you think left hand would be any different and why do we always have to be sheep and follow the rest of the world!! :-)

@Dinah Sinnock Please excuse me but your response doesn't make much sense, especially the "sheep" part. This is a strictly economical reason. When it comes to commerce and keeping costs down. RHD is a minority world wide and the "major" markets for RHD cars are very very far away. Closest is the UK, the next is India and the next after that is Japan. Every time that a vehicle part or vehicle has to come from further away, these costs add up and increase for local businesses and consumers. Allowing LHD cars now is a good way to counterbalance this.
