Drop the offshore wind dream

From "The National Electricity Sector Policy"

Go to the project

Why is Government & the RA still even talking about offshore wind? Can anyone do the math for INTERMITTENT electricity generation? The growing cost of the dream is in the $250 MILLION to $400+ MILLION range. That cost will be passed on to consumers. Then add Return on Investment, guaranteed income flow, constraint payments, infrastructure upgrades by BELCO, etc. Now add in the cost of BELCO's fossil fuel generators to be on standby 24x7 when the intermittent wind power drops, or there is no wind! How will our electricity rates go down?

Green UK has the highest electricity rate in the industrialized world. Consumers are getting hit with BILLIONS of Pounds in extra charges from wind farm owners who inflated the generation numbers big time. BILLIONS!!!! The former energy czar Miliband even admitted the models used by the vendors to estimate electricity generation were off - big time! OFF BIG TIME!!!

There's one reference quoting that wind turbines will not produce as much power as expected and three references showing that wind turbines are producing too much power.

@Gary Taylor Thanks for reading the stories, Gary. My goal was not to flood the forum with news stores. Three examples were sufficient to make my point. You can look for more on your own. Summary: When the power output falls BELOW the hypothetical generation calculation, the consumers will still pay the vendor (guaranteed income flow) plus power from another source. In our case, BELCO's generators are running on standby 24/7 to kick in to fill the demand. In addition to paying for the $250 to $400+ MILLION windfarm + other vendor charges, consumers are paying for running BELCO's generators on standby. Will our rates go up or down with all the added costs? If the power output goes ABOVE the demand, turbines are shut down. The consumers will pay for vendor revenue loss (guaranteed income flow & constraint payments) plus power on standby from another source. In our case, BELCO's generators are running on standby 24/7. In addition to paying for the $250 to $400+ MILLION windfarm, consumers are also paying for running BELCO's generators on standby PLUS guaranteed income flow & constraint payments to the windfarm owner. BELCO's upgraded infrastructure costs are in addition to the other costs and passed on to consumers. If you reply, please do not say add batteries. That is another added cost. And the earth is doing just fine. Nothing done in Bermuda will change that. BOTTOM LINE: A WIND FARM WILL NOT REDUCE THE COST OF ELECTRICITY IN BERMUDA. IT IS MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE.
@Joe Zajac Consumers will always be the ones paying, with their hard-earned money and their health while the politicians and corporations enjoy the profits. That will not change, unfortunately. We will all suffer and there is nothing at all that can be done.

@Gary Taylor oh please! Evil corporations, evil politicians, health. Where are the environmentalists stepping with their own money to build "renewable" energy projects? Gary, you and like-minded thinkers should put up the funding. Own the "solution." Always great at proposing that others spend money to feel good about themselves. Open your wallet. Feel free to suffer away while the rest of us enjoy life. If nothing can be done, then stop complaining and enjoy life.
