Economic recovery

From "Suggestions to stimulate economic recovery for Bermudians once Shelter in Place ends"

Go to the project

It should be possible for all single owner operators to continue doing business with the usual social distancing requirement. All should be required to wear protective masks, preferably N95s.

All subcontractors on building sites should be allowed to continue on a project where the team of subcontractors can maintain social distancing and all must wear masks as above

Similarly with landscape gardeners and house cleaners where social distancing is possible and the team of workers can find their own way to the job site, this also should be a relief to the workers and the economy. However in the case of housecleaners it might be necessary to limit the jobs to one a day and require cleaners on leaving to disinfect all surfaces in the home. All workers of whatever kind should wear proper protective masks.

While the above is reasonable the most important variable is when do you propose this occur. I am fully supportive of exercising restraint and learning from the mistakes of others - and there are plenty being made by those who put the corporate wealth above human life. This is one of the reasons for the decline of the US as an empire/superpower.... one of Bermuda's mistakes was to focus on the incredible and game changing success that started in the 1960s and laid the foundation for unparalleled growth and competition in the re/insurance industry. It was Bermudian based capital that kept Lloyd's afloat - but this industry and its culture did not seek to adopt any of the islands, instead its economic growth had government solely focused on this golden goose and how to stuff it at the expense of Bermudians not suited for nor seeing any of the economic benefits accruing to those providing legal, audit, rental, domestic, landscaping, dining services for the deepest pockets ever seen..... and we became a victim of our success in that a country is assessed by how it comes together and by the wealth/poverty gap. We are as strong as our weakest link and our success truly measured by the level of suffering of its citizens in the lowest economic bracket. So wait, I'd rather lose or donate what I could than remain well employed living in comfort and lose friends, family and even those I just know. And I'm a full blown capitalist by training but realise that it's the people in my life that are worth more than material comforts.
