Invest in Govt IDT

From "Red Tape Reduction Consultation"

Go to the project

A lot of the 'red tape' experienced by the public is directly related to the length of time it takes for Govt to deliver essential goods and services or the inability to make decisions in a timely manner.

The Civil Service is currently operating with an unreliable and inconsistent IT infrastructure i.e. PCs, computers, printers, phones and outdated operational processes.

Govt needs to make a sizable investment in IT. They need to be committed to replacing old machines and/or upgrading operation system versions. All CS staff should be working with a reasonably functioning computer with reliable printers, phones and applications.

Applications that the CS or public-facing kiosks use from 3rd party vendors do not work properly as they are non-compliant with the old operation system versions installed on our PCs.

The CS cannot deliver the goods and services the public requires if systems are constantly failing.

The CS is eager to deliver but are frustrated by this ongoing matter. A good analogy is having a shiny car with the latest accessories, but the engine is rusted, and the wheels are flat. Let's fix the car so that it runs like a F1.

Govt to invest in hardware, operating systems and more technicians to support.

On top of this, Government needs to trust IDT to be the authority on technology solutions. Outside Vendors seem to have more influence on IT spend than the IT team hired to manage IT. This leads to a predatory environment where vendors can approach departments for work without involving IDT or going through the proper processes. This regularly causes Departments to duplicate efforts and introduce inefficiencies by "going rouge" and procuring IT services on their own. IDT should be notified of ALL IT purchases within government and have the authority to dispute the invoices. This will prevent Departments from purchasing non-standard equipment and services in the first place. As it stands right now, departments can obtain any tech services or hardware, and IDT often is forced into moving heaven and earth with an already strained team in order to maintain and support it. The Engineers and Technical staff also need to be paid competitive salaries in order to attract and retain talent.

@Amaury Symonds and this is partly why we had a cyber incident of untold proportion and noone can say what happened. It is understood that absolutely NO ADDITIONAL TRAINING has occurred with government workers since the hack
