The Government of Bermuda Home

Long-term tourist visas

From "Suggestions to stimulate economic recovery for Bermudians once Shelter in Place ends"

Go to the project

“Working from home” has now been tested and proven largely successful on a global scale. Why not exploit this development, Bermuda, by offering long-term “tourist visas”? These would be available not only to non-Bermudian retirees who would like to spend, say, 6 months holidaying in Bermuda but crucially to non-Bermudian employed persons who wish to work-from-home in Bermuda. The latter would be conditional upon their business being based outside Bermuda and not a competitor of any Bermuda-based business. Issuance of such long-term “tourist  visas” would not require a controversial change in Immigration Law and could presumably be implemented rapidly and  could be readily adjustable/reversible. The presence of these temporary residents in Bermuda would contribute significantly to our economy. No need for reams of red tape or extortionate Government fees. They should be welcomed with open arms.

Agreed. Great idea that should be pushed by the BTA.

        Agreed.
The only tax should be the cost of the six month tourist Visa. Then, as Mark Rowe notes, they will spend their foreign currency in Bermuda. The Visa should clearly state that they can not work for Bermudian companies, or any activity within the Bermuda economy.

I think this idea has merit. However, if we did wish to attract oversees employed people to Bermuda to work remotely, we should consider that if we tax or license these potential tourist/ workers, the added cost could deter them from coming here.

A remote worker staying in Bermuda, say for 6 months. will be paid in foreign currency into a foreign bank account. He/she would spend a significant amount of that foreign currency on rent, goods and services in Bermuda, all of which are directly or indirectly taxed by the Bermuda Government - not to mention the money they are putting into the pockets of Bermudians. They should not be taxed or licensed until Bermuda is in the enviable position of having more such temporary residents than we can handle.

"Work-From-Home? Why Not Work-From-Bermuda" This is a great idea. BTA could get this message out sooner than later, and figure out the grey area when/if we see actual traction. We have reasonable internet access here and I can definitely see this being a little boost for those in big East Coast cities - it's easy to get excited about working from a beach rather than a tiny New York apartment with 1,000 other anxiety inducing, COVID-potential people using the same elevator!
