I support R. Rothwell’s comments on the importance of including clear regulations regarding pet ownership in rental properties. The current lack of pet regulations across the private rental sector has led to unnecessary hardship for responsible pet owners and contributed to rising rates of pet abandonment.

Responsible pet ownership should not be a barrier to safe and stable housing. I encourage the government to adopt stronger protections for tenants with pets.

The issue with this is that there is no legal definition of 'responsible pet owner'. If you make it illegal for discrimination on the basis of pet ownership, there is no protection for landlords against 'irresponsible pet owners'. Landlords should have the right to reject tenants with animals that are unsuitable for their property. How would you handle a situation where a renter turned up with two goats to rent a studio apartment, claiming the goats were 'pets' and the landlord had to accept the lease??
