The Government of Bermuda Home

Reopening trails and allowing solo sports - eg cycling, swimming, surfing etc

From "Suggestions to stimulate economic recovery for Bermudians once Shelter in Place ends"

First of all, I wanted to express my gratitude for everything that Bermuda gov is doing to keep us safe. I am very impressed with the level of leadership, transparency and ability to make tough decisions and quickly.

Having said that, I feel the restrictions around the exercise are unnecessarily severe and limit people in their ability to keep fit - physically and mentally. I strongly believe that pushing people to walk and run onto the roads is subjecting them to either putting their exercise on hold or running along the (very) fast moving traffic. Since the beginning of the lockdown last week due to less cars on the roads, the trucks and vans that are there - drive very fast. I feel very unsafe when I run (daily). I really believe it would be such a welcome change if people could walk and run on the trails again. Even before the lockdown everyone was keeping their distance, therefore I am confident this won't pose any health risks if people continue being respectful of social distancing rules. I also believe it would not pose any health risk if people were allowed to cycle on the roads for exercise as well as swim, paddle board, kayak, surf (use unmotorised watercraft of any kind) as long as they practice these alone and keep themselves safe (close to shore). We will need our mental and physical capacity once Bermuda is in the position to slowly open itself again and start economic recovery. In that context, I believe that if an activity can be practiced solo and naturally allow for physical distance - it should be allowed. No risk - only upside. We need to stay sane and healthy through this. And not stress about being hit by a truck for no good reason (as an example). Please trust we can and will behave as responsible adults should these amendments be introduced. Because we are. Thank you so much for giving these thoughts the time of day.

Update: I came across this research which shows that COVID19 is spreading indoors in majority of cases. So not only will exercise outdoors keep us sane and mentally and physically fit, it is a safer place to be - as long as we keep our distance from others.

I would love to be able to go to the beach ... I live at the top of a steep hill so have been unable to go for a walk because I know I won’t get back up the hill !!! I was working Sunday and have to drive around the island ... there was more people on the roads than vehicles and at times people didn’t move so I could get past ... walking along the trail and beaches would be much safer ... I do think the shelter in place should be kept in place for longer but opening the beaches would still allow people to social distance and exercise more safely and also help good mental health.
I agree! As families we do everything together in the house but limited to outdoor activities together. Family activities such as jogging, bike riding, swimming, boating....I honestly do not see the issue of these activities being considered a contagient. Lifting a ban on this will not only encourage outdoor exercise it will be nothing short of positive for our mental health. I have a teenager that does his online homeschooling. He's allowed 1 hour a day to be out and about. The less he does, the less he wants to do....i, as well get stuck in that mode. I get the point of the lockdown but we have a lot more knowledge of this virus than we did three weeks ago. I think we should reconsider some of the rules put in place...let's hope its soon.
They need to move on this. And yes nobody gets sick outside.

I would like to open this up a bit to those who enjoy family time on powercraft. Not all powered craft are 30 ft long and involve people fro several households. We enjoy taking our runabout out for a trip and anchoring off and swimming. No direct contact with other households. It is hard to understand why this is an unacceptable risk to the community.....

Hi..... I swim, fish most times and cycle sometimes as well. Do we know the importance of shelter in place? It's obvious it would be inconvenient and frustrating and boring no doubt. It is not life or death, you can ride around in your neighbourhood. I have seen people cycling mire than 1/4 mile radius point allowed.

Hi Natalia, I support your proposal. Research shows that people who have enough vitamin D and are physically fit generally recover from Coronavirus far quicker and with fewer complications. Stress is also a risk factor for Coronavirus, social isolation increases stress and exercise can be a great counterbalance to that stress - a way to unwind and improve your mental and physical well-being. There aren't that many places to exercise in Bermuda if you close the railway trails and forbid people from doing water sports. Fingers crossed!

@Anna Karasova Thank you so much! If there is a link to the research you mention that you have handy, please share it. Might be useful. I will add the research I came across above.

I agree that the government is doing a good job, but the restrictions regarding the track go a bit too far. I do believe the majority of people do keep a distance and there is room for it on tracks. Encountering an oncoming person on a 2 1/2' narrow sidewalk does not allow for distancing without someone going into the roadway.

We live right on the water’s edge, so 50% of our 1/2mile radius is in the water. Swimming / paddle boarding / kayaking responsibly within this area would open up so many possibilities to us. I understand that a blanket “no” makes enforcement much easier, but I feel is overly restrictive for some people

The fish are NOT contagious. With social distancing, I don’t see any problem allowing people to swim. As long as there is social distancing in the water and on the beach and the Life Guards can force this, backed up by the police -🤗
