Reusable Packaging Systems

From "REGULATING SINGLE-USE PLASTICS IN BERMUDA: Policy paper for public consultation"

Go to the project

Could this work in Bermuda? Maybe an entrepreneur wants to try something new! Creating new opportunities and creating new business models in Bermuda sounds like it could be a good idea if our health and the environment benefit.

The "Loop" article contains interesting information, especially about the need for the returnable packaging to be as convenient as the existing product offerings in the market so that consumers embrace it and use the "Loop" products and system. It also identifies the need for the system to be accessible and affordable for all consumers....not just the "early adopters" and higher income groups. [ What percentage of Bermuda's population fits that definition of income level? As Bermuda is already documented as having the highest cost of living in the world we do need to be careful on using overseas metrics to define economic class here.] The "Loop" system is expanding beyond an on line service and the article notes that there are "pilot programs" in place at major retailers in the UK and the USA----lets see how they work out the kinks and complications. [ Of course, if a local entrepreneur wants to jump in and take on the risk because they feel there is scope for economic reward so be it. ] Incidentally, what is the current Duty Rate on reusable plastic containers like the ones that the "Loop" program uses? How about reusable glass containers---what is the Duty Rate on them? A further thought, if single use plastic packaging is banned , and as aluminum & steel cans are recyclable, will this beneficial aspect be taken into consideration by Government and Duty lowered on all food and beverages imported in aluminum & steel cans? There are many fine details to consider, review and discuss-----will Government invite local businesses with knowledge and insight to be involved in the process?
@Robert Bruce Barritt We are hoping Government will provide incentives through duty relief for sustainable items that can be part of a circular economy model. We would welcome talking to you and learning what your thoughts are on the above and the fine details so we can work through these and advocate as need be. It is our belief that the Government wants to work with all stakeholders to identify the best models, products etc. for Bermuda.
@Beyond Plastic Bermuda John Barritt & Son Ltd is open to meeting with your group----feel free to call our offices and connect with me. I am not always at my desk but do follow up on voicemail messages.
