From "Suggestions to stimulate economic recovery for Bermudians once Shelter in Place ends"
Go to the project

Once shelter in place is lifted, we are going to provide a number of simple ways for Bermudians to earn a few extra dollars so that local dollar churn can increase.
Allow Bermudians to monetize their private vehicles through deregulation of an already existent infrastructure (Hitch) is a way to help people to put a few extra dollars in their pockets (at a price less than a taxi), using equipment they already own and infrastructure we already have (ie: their car, bike and smartphone).

Taxi service in Bermuda is terrible. I've also tried Hitch and the driver did not show up.

Hi Lisa,
Why not blame the Airlines for being late. If the planes are late, They can easily call ahead to the Taxi dispatchers to say how many passengers they have onboard and even poll to see how many folk will need Taxis. Many times passengers have Family members meeting them at the airport, then Taxis end up driving back empty!! Many times Taxis go to the airport 2 to 3 hours before the planes are due in order to secure a fare. I’m sure you would be very disappointed trying to make a Salary and not get paid. One thing you can do is prearrange a Taxi on your way back to Bermuda and he can then track the flight #

@Gereen Albouy Hi Gereen, the taxi companies were radioed by the taxi drivers. They could not get any more drivers at that late hour.

I have been stuck at the airport when my flight came in late at night. There were not enough taxis. I had no way to get home and no way to get a taxi. Having an online platform for transportation would have helped then. I support this idea.

Gereen Albuoy I concur with u. Allowing private cars to become like Uber or Lyft sort of speak in Bermuda are detrimental to the Taxi and Mini buses and pink/blue buses as well. I know that the taxi industry needs to be more unified.

Keith since you've been there, and I also agree Taxi Drivers need to speak up in the right places!
The Question was asked AFTER the Shelter In Place is over should we.....
OK, when Government first allowed to put the Mini Buses in place they were to go to certain areas, mainly the Beaches, now they are all over the Island including the Airport!
Currently we have "Hitch" added to this transport how much did they have to pay for their permissions to operate?? The rental electric cars are cutting into the Taxi business.... NOW someone is thinking of Adding "Private" vehicles, is not in our best interest. There would / should be insurance concerns to change a private vehicle to transport the general public. Will they then have to file the funds received into their Payroll tax filing?
This may take us into another direction / observation /conversation HOWEVER In my opinion there are other areas Government can use to generate jobs/income for the jobless.
One category that comes to mind is House keeper / Caregivers. Government can take a look and make sure those two are separate requirements and not combined as I generally see in the newspapers, sometimes they want you to service two and even seen three households! Either you want a Housekeeper to clean your house OR someone to look after your Child / Senior.....PLUS they then want you to look after the dog, get groceries etc. etc.
Other generated jobs for our people can be stacking shelves, delivery truck drivers, sales clerks, as I have seen many non Bermudians working in these fields.

I disagree "PRIVATE" vehicles getting into this mode of transport!
Taxi Owners / Drivers have not been able to work during this "Shelter in Place" .When purchasing their Taxis they have to pay Government for a medallion, which they are then able to sell when getting out of the business. Taxi rates have not increased for many years, plus they are even more regulated than the Mini Buses. Taxis Drivers are regulated on how to dress, how many hours their Taxis should be on the road.
There are sufficient modes of transport without adding any more, especially once the Buses come back on the road.

@Gereen Albouy This is for Economic Rebuild after this shelter in place. The General Taxi Community gets a "Bad Wrap" as they don't often respond to public needs and i've experienced it first hand.
There is also now talks with this shelter in place to give Taxi's the ability to do more work making deliveries so Government is thinking of them too, during the pandemic.
This doesn't have to be a permanent "fix" in place but would allow those that have lost their jobs to make some money. And government can put in a process to facilitate this with restrictions such as no airport pickups so those are reserved for Taxis. There are always ways to do things.

@Gereen Albouy It is a legitimate concern of taxi owners that they have invested in their medallion, which would lose a lot of value if the industry was opened to others.
The answer to this is not to oppose changes that would undoubtedly benefit the wider public, but instead to press for a rebate on the the value of the medallion to reflect the loss in value. Government would be collecting additional payroll tax revenues from "uber" drivers, so giving some form of rebate to taxi owners would not necessarily cost money on a net basis, and would be a fair way to compensate taxi owners.

Agree, it's what Bermuda Needs both for the Client base on Island as well as perhaps add the necessary competition to bring up the Service in the existing Institution.
