2018 figures suggest 330M being spent by residents on OVERSEAS tourism. Encourage 'stay-cations' to reduce these outflows that do little to feed the economic spiral in Bermuda. A concerted campaign by Government and BTA.

  • Encourage hoteliers/ restaurants/ bars to reinvest & upgrade. Subsidized loans for scrutinized upgrades.
  • Advertising campaign (paid by BTA) with high quality location focused TV and Print.
  • Encourage deep discounting (20%) for pre-booking with 20% non-refund deposit. 25% discount for long-stays over 5 days. Govt. to give 5% subsidy.
  • 50% cut in occupancy tax (it will be made back through stimulation of services/ supplies bought by hoteliers).
  • Bermuda College low cost courses for new entrants into the Services industry.
  • Ensure quality/service is provided by using random government inspections. Failure might result in 5% subsidy being withheld or License put on probation.

The 'New Normal' may be to buy locally, support Bermuda food production and vacation locally. For those who are or will be out of work - the luxury of all this will appear annoying. Those luckily still employed, please SPEND LOCALLY not just go for the cheaper option overseas - support your neighbour.

I suggest each bus stop have a bench or benches for passengers waiting to catch the bus. Over the last few years and especially since the advent of Airbnb visitors, many days I drive across bus stops island wide and see the visitors and the locals standing awaiting the arrival of a bus. And it really saddens me to see this especially if it is elderly people. I feel that during this time (covid 19 pandemic and with Bermuda soon going into phase 4) now would be the ideal time to hire carpenters or utilize persons receiving the unemployment benefit to get this/these done, and when the tourist do return to Bermuda we can proudly have seats for them while they await our public transportation.
