Utilize young Bermuda talent

From "Suggestions to stimulate economic recovery for Bermudians once Shelter in Place ends"

Go to the project

There are so many young Bermudians who have completed their degrees in several areas specifically marketing and should be utilized vs using overseas companies to cut down on expenses. We have several who have worked in the US or UK to gain experience and either have returned home and are not being utilized or have stayed in the UK or US if they can to find opportunities. I was glad to hear the Premier state in his Press conference that they are utilizing some of our young talented individuals (ie biochemist Carika Weldon). These young persons have spent a lot of funds and time on their education and some gaining experience off island so that they can come back to Bermuda and contribute to Bermuda. Hopefully these young people can use their skills and assist with this economic recovery.

As many businesses in Bermuda have not been ready for the change that has been cast upon them, I would suggest that they hire Senior high school students and college students who would normally be looking for a summer job to upgrade their computer systems, develop websites and ready them for more online browsing and shopping. Bermudian students are brilliant and very adept at the technology of today and ready for that of tomorrow.
Yes thank you and I totally agree. Great ideas from both that should not be overlooked. We want to get as much traction as we can!!!!

HI Donna, Yes I totally agree . As mentioned, I realize that the forum chains and ideas are more apt to be noticed by Government if there is enough interest generated in the forum chain (as shared by the Premier) - so rather than start a new forum chain - I thought it would bolster your suggestion by supplementing it with additional ideas that address our youth and those returning to the island or currently present whose talents, skills and desire to work might be overlooked or under utilized. Totally 100% support your idea - hopefully by adding to the conversation it will help elevate your suggestion among the 100+ others listed in the forum. Cheers
What I meant to include is that they have new ideas, International experiences that can be used to enhance Bermuda's product. I feel our young people are under utilized and have a lot to offer Bermuda.

Along those lines - rather than start a new forum chain - I would like to make the following suggestion. Many students return home in the summer from university and take on seasonal work in tourism industries to help support their education. Most of these students would have been starting employment in April and May with others joining from Bermuda College and Bermuda high schools. Many of these students are employed each year by Dockyard businesses who have had to close. Dockyard as a destination in whole has not yet recovered from the damages caused by Hurricane Humberto just 6 months ago. I have passed along the suggestion to the BTA, Wedco and the Dockyard community that we need to utilize this time wisely to clean up, repair, elevate our product individually and collectively to return to a level of safety, cleanliness and standards that should be expected. As individual business owners take on the challenge of regenerating an income and restarting their businesses - perhaps the larger community who are not working and being supported through financial assistance can contribute to this community endeavour. This could include the large student population who could be tasked with volunteering x number of hours a week in exchange for a stipend similar to the youth summer employment placement program annually offered through Community and Cultural Affairs (should funding be available). This will not only provide them with a small income (which in turn is saved for further education and also finds its way back into the economy through purchases such as food, utilities and services) but this will also give them a sense of purpose and direction for the summer - one that supports the businesses that normally employ them so as to create a sustainable system that ensures the employers can return to business and rehire them once again when able. This is the guidance I have already provided my son - an expectation that he will in turn volunteer his time to help his employer where needed such as maintenance, once Shelter in Place has been lifted and he is able to contribute. Thank you for considering.
@Sundée Faulkner I am not talking about summer students, I am talking about students who have already graduated, spent time gaining experience in the US or UK and have returned home looking for permanent employment. They are not only coming back with a degree but experience as well which is what we always advise our young persons to get as much experience as they can before returning to Bermuda.
