The Government of Bermuda Home

We need a multi faceted energy approach - going forward that means more renewables, less on fossil fuels

From "The National Electricity Sector Policy"

Go to the project

We are homeowners, residents and Bermudians here in Bermuda and care about the long term viability of the island for ourselves, our children, and future generations.

Our community needs a multi-faceted approach to our energy. It must include an assortment of renewables and other options for the future, and a reduction of carbon dioxide emitting sources. Today we have a strong leg in the CO2 emitting world, and we can't abandon it now, but we can't keep it as our only source, that's not sustainable for the planet, or for our island community. The build out of a major LNG infrastructure on the island and the costs involved will become an excuse by Belco to not pursue these other paths. Instead we need to encourage other energy sources and ways to guarantee the reliable delivery of that energy.

We have installed solar pv at our home, and we have a good understanding of the variability of sunlight. Not only the night/day, the seasonal, but also the cloudy weeks with little sunlight. But this is an easily understood set of issues that we can address with data and risk modelling (something we are particularly good at on this island). It can be solved with a variety of technologies - more PV, and batteries. It also highlights the need for alternative sources to PV. Wind being the next alternative, and we could consider other options like wave, current, thermal etc.

Why not take the money considered here for the LNG capital spend and the PV of the saved future fuel spend and use it to fund these technologies. Belco could finance roof top/residential solar, it would provide a future revenue stream for Belco and its investors. Let's put solar on every parking lot - more energy, cooler cars.

The sun isn't going to get more expensive. Over the years, solar panels have seen a large reduction in costs and gains in efficiency and we should expect those trends to continue. Conversely, Oil and Natural Gas are most likely going to get more expensive, and will continue to see volatile prices in the current geo political environment.

So for the good of our future, our children's future and our planet's future, lets actually give the alternative goals Government as already set a real chance, and not give Belco a capital project which becomes the excuse not to try for those goals.

Thank you for your consideration.
