This would help restore empty properties, create more housing opportunities, and give Bermudians a pathway to homeownership.The Main IdeaMany homes in Bermuda are sitting empty, damaged, or neglected because owners may not have the money, time, or interest to repair them. At the same time, many people are struggling to find affordable housing or cannot qualify for a traditional mortgage right away.This program would allow approved renters to move into these homes under a structured rent-to-buy agreement, with part of their monthly rent going toward eventually purchasing the property.How It Could WorkThe Government would create a registry of derelict homes whose owners are willing to participate.Property owners would list their houses with the program. The Government or a housing authority would inspect the property and estimate the repair costs.Approved applicants would apply to rent-to-buy the home. They would need to show that they have steady income and are committed to maintaining the property.A formal agreement would be created between the owner and the applicant.
