Consultation on Amendments to the Private Roads Acts
Phases
Consultation
In the 2025 Throne Speech, the Government committed to modernising Bermuda’s private road legislation to improve safety, accessibility, and fairness for all residents.
At present, two laws – the Private Roads (Improvement) Act 1969 and the Private Roads (Lighting) Act 1984 – set out how improvements such as paving, lighting, and repairs can be carried out. However, many residents have told us the system is too complex, costly, and does not always meet the needs of today’s communities.
The Government is therefore seeking your views on proposed changes that would:
- Give the Minister greater flexibility to carry out safety upgrades such as speed bumps, safety mirrors, and other improvements in the public interest;
- Reduce the financial burden on residents by reviewing the way contributions are required; and
- Ensure private road improvements can be delivered more fairly and efficiently.
This consultation is your opportunity to share your experiences and ideas. Your input will help shape new legislation that makes Bermuda’s private roads safer and more accessible for everyone.
